Energetically and practically, it’s so important to continue to nurture your business… even after all your systems are in place and the clients are flowing in. Anytime my work slows down more than I’d like, I ‘take a moment with my business’ and my contracts magically pick right up again. I can’t tell you how it works (these ‘moments with my business’ don’t always involve any outward changes or any extra marketing) but I can tell you that it works.
It can be as simple as sitting down to review my financial targets and recent months’ income; or doing little updates to a website page I haven’t looked at in a while; even just re-reading a blog post so those ideas are fresh in my mind. It always seems to help, like magic.
"Where focus goes, energy flows"
But even more powerful than ‘puttering’ or re-reading a blog post is when I actually devote some time to things that are highly likely to make a difference.
It can be difficult to know where to focus your energy to grow your business. There are so many opinions and shiny things out there! So, where is your precious energy best spent this quarter?
I have to admit, I really appreciate the direction these trends are taking us. To me, these trends speak of authenticity and human connection in business. Let’s take a look.
4 Ways to Grow Your Business in 2023
1. Results-based Marketing
What results do your clients get when they work with you? Spell this out on your website, sales pages, and in your marketing. For example, instead of saying “I offer online coaching and in-person massage and reflexology” you need to tell people why they should care what you offer. To carry forward our example, we might say something like “I help people become more assertive and confident through online coaching, and I help relive pain and tension with in-person massage and reflexology”.
2. More Personalization
Even though it can feel uncomfortable, be as authentically personal as possible on your website. Be sure to use your authentic voice (write the way you speak). Try adding a “founder’s note” to your home page, which is a brief blurb that immediately paints a picture of the “who” behind your business. And these days you simply MUST have photos of yourself; your ideal clients want to feel like they can see you and connect with you.
3. Add Video
Further to point number 2, but deserving of its own section, VIDEO is bigger than ever as we move into 2023. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend creating one or a few brief videos for your website and using video in your social media. You don’t need fancy equipment these days; your smart phone and some good lighting will do the trick. (In fact, we can even work together via Zoom to create a video for your website if you’re not sure where to start or you don’t have the time to make videos happen.) Try a ‘hello’ video on your Home page and/or some brief ‘explanation + invitation’ videos on your services page, letting your ideal clients know how they can get started working with you.
4. Share Client Success Stories
Collecting testimonials is a great idea. Sharing some client success stories will take that to another level. A client success story is like a case study. It will share some of the journey your client took with you, how things turned out (this is usually where the testimonial appears) and then it goes on to share a follow-up regarding how things have been going since they finished working with you. Even if you work in a privacy-sensitive industry like counselling you can most likely create at least one anonymous client success story and you can make sure there is a disclaimer indicating the details have been changed to protect the privacy of the client. Can you think of a client success story you could share?
To summarize, as we move into the first quarter of 2023 the top trends for growing your business are to talk about results in your web copy and marketing, get personal and share some of your wonderful authentic self, add video to your website, and share client success stories.
I want to challenge you to try one or all four of these 2023 business-growing trends in Q1, and I would absolutely love to hear how it goes!
